Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman hopes to build confidence gradually for a defensive unit that admittedly needs a lot of work heading into the season.
At least in the early going of the season, Sherman aims to slow down a high-tempo offense that at times worked to the detriment of the Aggies' defense because it sometimes scored too quickly.
Stretching the Aggies' time of possession is a big emphasis as the team prepares for its Sept. 5 opener against Stephen F. Austin.

"Last year, we really hurried our tempo, which could have been a curse at different times during the season," Sherman said. "We were going fast and not milking the clock very much."
Sherman's concern is understandable, considering the Aggies allowed a Big 12 worst 33.5 points per game and ranked .
