Auburn Football In 2010

Cam Newton was so eager to spread the credit for the victory of the season-opening Saturday that it would be glad to share the podium after the games.
Newton was cool and charismatic in front of dozens of reporters after his five-touchdown performance in 52-26 victory at Auburn in the state of Arkansas. But it was downright shameful when accepting praise.
Auburn 608 yards of total offense provided many opportunities to spread the wealth:

* Mario Fannin caught four passes, including two for touchdowns.
* Recipient Kodi Burns scored the opening touchdown of the game as a Wildcat quarterback.
* Senior quarterback Neil Caudle reserves entered the game and connect with Darvin Adams on a trick play for 42 yards.
"I wanted to run to meet him, I was so happy," gushed from Newton. "It's the old saying, good things happen to good people."
Auburn's first win - his fifteenth consecutive victory against a Sun Belt opponent - offered plenty of fodder for critics. However, Newton's debut helped to cushion any concerns.
"Cam has a lot of work to do, but for its first football game, I could not be more proud of what he did," said head coach Gene Chizik.
Newton threw for 186 yards and ran for 171. The latest record marks a new Auburn quarterback one game set in 1974 by Phil Gargis.
Not all races were designed.
Newton 71-yard touchdown dash in the second quarter appeared to be a draw schedule. But Newton said he was actually a broken play that he decided to explode when the "Red Sea parted" in front of him.
"I did not even go through my reads," Newton said.
Most yards in Auburn was on the floor, but offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn stayed predictably unpredictable. After coaches talked about how in August along the corridor would Fannin No. 1, the largest yet only three times. Dyer and sophomore Onterio McCalebb combined for 23 rushes and 171 yards.
Fannin also had an ugly blunder in Saturday's match point.
Auburn missed a shot in the end zone through questionable clock management at the end of the first half. Demond Washington dropped the kickoff of the second half. After the Red Wolves scored and Auburn recovered the ball, Fannin fumbled on the first play of the Tigers in the line of scrimmage.
Auburn seemed to have another fumble a few minutes, but instant replay determined that McCalebb down when the ball bounced out.
"You come out in the third quarter with the hope of making a statement and the statement we made was not good," Chizik said.
Auburn recovered quickly, however, and never let ASU get within sniffing distance of an upset. Much of this can be credited to the defense, who overcame a shaky first half to force many punts quickly after halftime.
Chizik said defensive coordinator Ted Roof did a good job to adjust to ASU first-year coordinator Hugh freezing, which revealed the existence of unseen wrinkles in the offensive of the red wolf. "
Auburn travels to Mississippi State on Thursday night, and the rapid change in five days stood prominently in the post-game discussion.
"We have much work to do to play a game of the SEC in five days," said Chizik.
The Bulldogs recorded 569 yards in a 49-7 blowout of Memphis, another offensive slug-fest may be on the horizon.
