Florida announced late Saturday that Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp was hired to replace Urban Meyer as coach of the Gators' new head.
Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said Muschamp was the only person offering the job and the person intended to replace Meyer, who surprisingly out on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, there was a report of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was finalizing an agreement with the Gators. Stoops denied the rumor.
Muschamp, 39, comes to Florida after he was the coach of honor in Texas since November 2008 and is a native of Gainesville.
Muschamp, a veteran coach of 16 years, has 12 years experience in the Southeastern Conference, eight as a coach and four as a player. Muschamp served as defensive coordinator at Auburn University (2006-07) and LSU (2002-04, was the linebackers coach at LSU in 2001) and was a finalist for the 2007 Broyles Award as coach of the nation's top assistant .
