Five-alarm Fire Roars In Downtown Baltimore Heavey Fire


Five-alarm fire broke out last week in a building at the adult-entertainment district in Baltimore, quickly spread, sending thick smoke throughout the city center and snarling traffic.

Fire Battalion Chief Representative Kevin Cartwright said the fire started in one building and then spread to four or five others. Two buildings were evacuated, he said, including one that houses the Fire Department. The area is known as the Block.

Cartwright said no injuries were reported.

Gray smoke poured from at least one of the buildings, pillows center, and fire hydrants and ladders poured water on the flames.

Block neighborhood of strip clubs with gaudy lights, including Larry Flynt in Hustler Club. Some centers are historic theaters.

Joanna Trela, 38, office manager for a law firm that works on the 27-floor building overlooking the fire scene. She said she looked out the window and noticed a fire after the prosecutor in his firm suggested that something was wrong with the ventilation system.

"We smelled it," Trela said.

Fire her temporarily in a quandary.

"The most frustrating part, they closed the garage, so that no one in our house, you can leave, so we're all hanging out," Trela said.
