Family issued a statement Monday that said the doctors told her that further treatment for her cancer will be counterproductive, and a family friend described the conditions at Elizabeth Edwards Associated Press.
A friend said Elizabeth Edwards was briefly hospitalized last week and received treatment, but doctors have told her that she can have only up to a couple months of life left. Each spoke on condition of anonymity because of the personal information disclosed.

Her sister, brother, nieces, nephews, former adviser to the campaign and other friends were also there. The friend said, Elizabeth Edwards is not in pain and in good spirits, despite the seriousness of their situation.
Elizabeth Edwards, a popular figure among the democratic activists, as she campaigns with her husband's two presidential bids, posted on her page that she can not express my love and gratitude she feels for those who supports me and inspires her.
"Days of our lives, for all of us are numbered," she wrote. "We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we are not able to gather so much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being a man. But I've found that the simple act of living with hope and daily efforts to have a positive influence in the world, the days I have made all the more meaningful and valuable. And for this I am grateful. "
61-year-old Elizabeth Edwards is separated from her husband after he confessed to an extramarital affair and the child's father campaign videographer. Elizabeth Edwards battled breast cancer since 2004 and diagnosed in the last days of the campaign, when her husband was the Democratic vice-presidential candidate.
