Syracuse Wins Basketball


Kris Joseph and Rick Jackson scored 14 points apiece as No. 10 ranked Syracuse overcame a slow start to defend against Northern Iowa, 68-46, in the season opener for both teams at the Carrier Dome.
Jackson went down seven rebounds, while Dion Waiters added 10 points in his collegiate debut in the Orange (1-0), which claimed the first meeting between the two teams.
Johnny Morales scored the game 15 points and Anthony James added 12 for the Panthers (0-1), who fell to 7-10 against ranked opponents since 2002-03.
Northern Iowa shot a miserable 15-of-55 from the floor, including a paltry 6 - of-33 from three-point territory in a battle of the schools that won 30 games and advanced to the Sweet 16 last season .
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim recorded the 830th win of his career to match with Mt. St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan head for fifth place on the all-time Division I list.
With orange leading by just three at halftime, Joseph buried a triple and added a trio of free throws and a jumper Jackson capped a 13-1 run to start the second half gave Syracuse a 36-21 lead with 14 : 50 to go.
Northern Iowa never got closer to 13 the rest of the way, as Syracuse had 15 of his 23 shots from the floor in the second half.
Both teams shot miserably from the floor in a low scoring first half. The visitors were 8-for-30, including 3-of-17 from beyond the arc, while the Orange was just 7-of-22.
Brandon Triche bridge and 1-for-2 in the line of Jackson and Joseph gave Syracuse 23-18 advantage, the advantage of either side in the first 20 minutes, less than a minute to play.
Santiago jumper with 23 ticks left closed the gap to 23-20 at halftime.
