USA One Nation Rally

As a coalition of liberal activists gather in Washington, NAACP President Ben Jealous tells CNN that the "One Nation" movement is not "an alternative to the tea party, which is the antidote to the tea party" .
The "One Nation Working Together" will be held Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, just five weeks after the Tea Party enthusiasts gathered in Washington and a month before the midterm elections.
Jealous, told CNN that welcomes members of the Tea Party, but opposed to the extremists in the movement that harbor racist views. Even so, jealous says he did invite a known conservative talk at the rally on Saturday but refused to disclose the name of the person, not being addressed at the meeting.
Jealous said the alliance of groups have come together to offer a positive alternative to negative rhetoric, and to demand better education and economic opportunities. The "One Nation" movement, he said, prefer to see the work for 99 percent of Americans rather than tax cuts for the top one percent of Americans.
The rally began with an interfaith service at 11 am ET. As the service started, the crowds were beginning to thicken at the National Mall near the Lincoln Memorial, where the rally will take place.
Organizers of the demand for a wide range of supporters, some of which are already associated with liberal causes - such as union workers, environmentalists, gay activists and student leaders. However, "a nation" says the backing of a quarter obvious - such as the elderly, veterans and religious leaders.
The group's website provides a list of basic principles and priorities. These include direct assistance to unemployed workers and help for small businesses and local governments trying to hire new workers, a minimum wage increase, health care reform, changes in immigration policy, and increased bankruptcy protection foreclosure, and more money for education, from preschool through college.
The demonstration came after another conservative demonstration in August.
Commentator Glenn Beck drew tens of thousands of area party activists to the Lincoln Memorial during the Renaissance-style meeting on August 28. The time and place of the event stirred controversy among civil rights activists, as it was in the 47 anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. 's "I have a dream" and in the same place.
At noon, a variety of speakers and performers get on stage - the program mix of speeches from activists and speakers with music, historical readings, and even video clips.
Among those scheduled to appear are the actor Harry Belafonte, opera singer Angela Brown, the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, NAACP President Ben Jealous, and Diana Ortiz, a Catholic nun who was kidnapped and tortured by security forces while working in Guatemala.
The program is scheduled to conclude at 4 pm, with funk legend George Clinton, performing the classic song, "One nation under a groove."
