According to the Associated Press, Gage also lied about his age in 1957 when she won the Miss USA pageant. Gage said she was 21, when she was actually 18. Gage won the crown after she refused to even have a boyfriend.
"I want to wait until he is 26 before you become seriously interested in the opposite sex," said Leona Gage, according to the Baltimore Sun.
But in reality, Gage had been married twice before she won the contest. Both marriages took place when he was 14.
The loss of the crown, however, briefly increased Gage fame. Even appeared on the Ed Sullivan show shortly after his controversial beauty pageant was in the public eye.
According to his son, Gage died of heart failure at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles.
