General David Petraeus said the move could cause problems, not just in Kabul but throughout the world. "
Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center, plans to put copies of the holy book in a bonfire to celebrate the anniversary this week of 9 / 11 attacks.
The White House and NATO have also expressed concern about the plan.
White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said Tuesday that "any kind of activity that puts our troops in danger is a concern for this administration."
Earlier, the U.S. embassy in Kabul issued a statement condemning the plans of the non-denominational church in Gainesville, Florida.
"It could endanger the troops and could endanger the global effort," Petraeus said in a statement to the U.S. media. "It is precisely the type of action the Taliban uses and can cause significant problems.
"Not only here but worldwide, we are committed to the Islamic community," said Petraeus, who heads a force of 150,000 NATO against the Taliban insurgency.
Meanwhile, NATO chief, Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Thursday criticized plans by the church, telling reporters that Korans burning violated the NATO alliance "values."
"There is a risk that can also have a negative impact on the safety of our troops," AFP news agency quoted him as saying.
Mr Jones said the church was "very concerned" after hearing Petraeus alert and was taking his words seriously. He said the church was praying on the matter but said the group had "firmly made up our minds."
