Like several new programs this season, the ABC sitcom is not the cover-your-eyes bad or put-the-DVR-season pass welfare. It is simply a species of what is, sometimes cute and funny - thanks mostly a cast of comedy veterans - but largely insignificant.
"Better With You", which premieres at 8:30 pm ET Wednesday, is the fourth member of the comedy block on ABC for the night, and like the other three is a show about a family - in this case two sisters (Jennifer Finnigan and Joanna Garcia), their partners (Josh Cooke and Jake Lacy) and parents (Debra Jo Rupp and Kurt Fuller). Unlike its companion show ("The Middle", "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town") is a traditional multi-camera, live-audience sitcom.
That is not what makes it feel so different from the rest of the block. Fun is fun, regardless of how a program is recorded. What makes "better with you" an incongruous fit with other ABC programs is that comedy is not as blunt. You will see a lot of punchlines coming.
Finnigan and Cooke - who several years ago co-starred on the NBC short-lived "Committed" - Maddie and Ben play a successful couple with a great apartment in New York and long-term affair. They're not married yet and are telling everyone who will listen that it is "a valid life choice." Garcia ("privileged", "Reba") is Mia, more capricious sister Maddie in the release announcing Wednesday that she and the musician Casey (newcomer Lacy) will get married after knowing each other for all 7 1 / 2 weeks. The series has nothing new to add to the formula of comedy, but has good comic timing that some annoying sitcoms to dominate more. These characters may be stock characters, but are pleasant and fun.
The show was created, written and produced by Friends of producer Shana Goldberg-Meehan, who brings the same energy and pace that best to you. The ace in the hole program is the talented Joanna Garcia, who is so charismatic and relatable here as she was privileged and Reba.
