Tony Curtis, one of the icons of Hollywood big screen, has died, it was announced today (September 30). He was 85. The cause of death is still unknown, but a spokesman for his daughter Jamie Lee Curtis confirmed his death .Curtis made his big screen debut in 1949 and appeared in a series of films throughout the 50's, before gaining fame in the drama The sweet smell of success. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Sidney Poitier The Fugitive in 1958.
It then appeared alongside Marilyn Monroe in Billy Wilder's classic comedy Some Like It Hot, in which she played a jazz musician in the race. He is known for working with Monroe described as "like kissing Hitler", but then insisted that the appointment was a joke.
His other notable films include The Vikings, Spartacus and The Boston Strangler.
He led a colorful personal life, married six times.
When asked in 2008 what he would have written on his tombstone, Curtis said, "Nobody's Perfect" - a reference to the closing line of Some Like It Hot.
