The NFL put in a star-studded event to kick off each season, and this year was no exception. Dave Matthews was the pregame attraction for fans, and Caillat was chosen to sing the national anthem. The delivery was surprising to many who watched, including the players.
"I was going before making my bets in the game, and I saw (Caillat) singing the national anthem," said Mark Brumber. "Then, I was surprised with his performance, and when I realized I forgot to make my bets, it was too late, the game had begun."
It is rare that an action creates so much attention. Whitney Houston sang what many believed was the best performance ever of the national anthem at the Super Bowl, but most players had already placed their bets for the big game. This was different, with some punters waiting all the way until the last minute to make their bets.
Players around the world have been waiting all summer for the return of the NFL. Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings and the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints began the year. The Saints won, but as often happens with those responsible for the odds, the chances of arriving square with a line of New Orleans -5.
Caillat is just one of dozens of artists who will have the honor of singing the national anthem before football games this year. The anthem is played before every sporting event, and the NFL often called famous artists to do the honors.
