New York State's monthly statewide unemployment rate has been declining since February 2010 and is now below the required average for certain benefits under the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Tier 4, the NYS Department of Labor said in a press release.
The monthly average unemployment rate for April, May and June was 8.3%. This is two-tenths of a percentage point below the 8.5% rate needed for the federal government to grant unemployed workers six weeks of additional benefits.
This drop in the unemployment rate will reduce the maximum number of weeks an unemployed New Yorker can get from 99 weeks to 93 weeks. But, because the bill also states that the extended Tier 4 benefits will end the week of December 5, many will not even be able to reach the new reduced maximum.
Unemployed New Yorkers can use the NYS Department of Labor's Unempolyment to find out the number of weeks they are eligible for. Starting August 1916, no new claims for these Tier 4 benefits can be filed.
