Today Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony


About 7,000 men, women and children sharing a show of cultural heritage of India at a gala opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games with the icing on the cake is Maestro AR Rahman's performance in the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium on Sunday.
With most tickets are already sold out, the two-hour ceremony, scheduled from 7 pm, will start with President Pratibha Patil and Prince Charles of Great Britain hopes to declare the Games open in front of a capacity packed stadium tomorrow 65,000.
The 619 member strong Indian contingent will be led by Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra to carry the Indian flag during the ceremony.
While tennis sensation Sania Mirza will not be part of the parade as India has preferred to rest as Hyederabadi, badminton star Saina Nehwal, Beijing Olympic Games bronze medalist Vijender Kumar Boxer and wrestler Sushil Kumar is one of the six carried the baton in the formal part of the event.


There will be seven segments - including the pace of India, Swagatam, tree of knowledge, Yoga, India Grand Tour and Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman's anthem delivery GTC 'Jiyo Jeet Utho Badh' - in the nearly three-hour ceremony .
The evaluation panel included the International Olympic Committee president, Jacques Rogge, the Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennell, New Zealand, Anand Satyanand Governor-General Sir, Prince Albert II of Monaco and the presidents of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed and Marcus Stephen from Nauru.
India hosts in order to enter the traditional rivalry between champions Australia and England who have been fighting for the top two slots in the past.
The Australians, who have passed the gold and overall medal counts in the last five games and is expected to once again confirmed as number one in the nation, sent its largest ever one-off team multidisciplinary shore sporting event in an attempt to continue their reign in Delhi.
Although the mark in the country of high water of 221 medals (84 gold, 69 silver and 68 bronze) at the Games in Melbourne 2006 is unlikely to be surpassed in India, team officials expect another gold rush.
Australia's gold medal record came in the 1994 Victoria Games in Canada, with 87.
