Guccione died Wednesday at a hospital in Plano, Texas.
Born in New York, Guccione launched Penthouse in London in 1965 and took the first edition in the United States four years later as an opponent to less than Playboy explicit.
One of his best-selling issues featured nude photographs of the reigning Miss America Vanessa Williams in 1984.
At one point Guccione, who was also editor in chief of the magazine, was one of the richest men in the United States.
But the advance of Internet pornography led to declining sales and Guccione was forced to relinquish ownership of the magazine in 2004.
Guccione was married three times and had five children.
