why Baltimore County Public Schools Closed

District spokesman Baltimore County Public Schools said that all Baltimore County Public Schools are closing two hours early today due to extreme heat. The temperature is expected to reach 93-94 degrees, leaving the district with the difficult decision to shorten the school day. All afternoon pre-K classes will be closed for the day and evening activities will be on a case by case basis.
Many schools have no air conditioning in the county. Only about 125 of the 173 schools. Herndon says: "We have a number of our schools without air conditioning, particularly in the classroom. The combination of both heat and humidity made once distractingly uncomfortable conditions in some of the classrooms."
Shortening the school day is a logistical nightmare. The Baltimore County Public Schools has about 70,000 students who travel by an estimated 800 buses home. However, parents were alerted this morning on the reduced hours. Temperatures are expected to be in the future too hot, and finally cool down in the area on Friday.Listen
