Today International Ozone Day 2010

United Nations proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed. The Protocol seeks to protect the ozone layer by setting timetables for the elimination of production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances and control international trade in these substances. To date, 196 states have ratified the Protocol, including Israel.

The ozone layer acts as a protective barrier against UV rays that are harmful to humans, plants and animals. Scientists believe that the Protocol had not been approved, ozone depletion have worsened, so the impact on the increase in skin cancer (Israel ranks third worldwide in the incidence of melanoma per capita) and cataracts. The cooperation of the parties in implementing the Protocol has reduced ozone-depleting substances by over 98% compared with the base year. Moreover, these reductions have also contributed significantly to the fight against global warming and that the controlled substances are also greenhouse gases.

The parties to the Protocol are studying the proposals for the inclusion of a small list of greenhouse gases (used in refrigeration and cooling systems, fire extinguishers and industry) to the Protocol and setting reduction targets production and consumption of greenhouse gases, although these materials do not deplete the ozone layer. Several companies around the world have begun to introduce the new generation of "greenhouse gases" that are safe for the ozone and greenhouse gases are, in applications such as air conditioning, refrigeration and industrial production. Israel is also examining the possibilities of production of domestic refrigerators using natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and others. Similarly, sellers of vending machines is considering the import of machines fitted with a friendly refrigerant (oil). In practice, one of the largest food chains in Israel and operates a cooling system based on an ecological refrigerant (carbon dioxide) at its hub.
