Mda Jerry Lewis telethon 2010

Despite economic problems, officials say MDA Jerry Lewis Telethon pledges and the job of editing Day this year amounted to $ 58.9 million.
While the amount was reduced from $ 60,500,000 last year and a record U.S. $ 65 million in 2008, Lewis said he was pleased with the support to advance research and service programs of the Muscular Dystrophy Association .
"I am encouraged by the unique ability of Americans to help others in need, when they themselves are likely to financial problems," said Lewis, national chairman of the Tucson, Arizona-based MDA.
The annual telethon originated from the 45th fifth consecutive year from the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas and came to some 40 million viewers through 170 television stations.
Dozens of artists joined the 21 1/2-hour event, including Barry Manilow, Michael Feinstein, Maureen McGovern, Charo, Norm Crosby Carrot Top.
co-hosts included Telethon Jann Carl, Alison Sweeney and Nancy O'Dell.
"I think ($ 58,900,000) is a huge amount for a difficult economy," said Carl The Associated Press. "This is what brings tears to our eyes. It shows the heart of America. We are terribly humbled and so grateful."
For the first time, a child - MDA National Goodwill Ambassador Abbey Umali, 11, of Redlands, California - opened the telethon Sunday afternoon. She performed two songs, including "Ordinary Miracle", attended by an enthusiastic public response.
Lewis said the funds will allow the MDA to continue funding research worldwide to find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and related diseases.
"People see the progress MDA is doing to children and adults living with muscle disease," he said. "I'm really grateful for your attention enough to brighten the future for 'my children'."
Lewis, 84, ended the telethon with the traditional singing of his signature song, "You'll Never Walk Alone."
