Blackberry Playbook

RIM today took the wraps off its BlackBerry playbook, and beat the rumor became reality: A BlackBerry tablet is on its way. It is not due out until early 2011, but for now, is the talk of the town. And with good reason: The market is a cool pictures tablet, so to speak, for RIM to position a product that appeals across multiple market segments and demographics.

RIM unit showed in his speech today in San Francisco Devcon seems to strike some notes necessary and highly attractive. The tablet BlackBerry playbook itself has a 7 inch screen that rivals the Samsung tab Galaxy out later this year. It incorporates a dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, front and rear facing cameras and video recording of 1080. It also has a micro USB port, and output microHDMI. Not bad in a thin 0.38-inch package. These specifications exceed the Galaxy form on paper, in some accounts-and the inclusion of ports is an attractive add (so far, only peed Stream TV has emerged with the ports of the note-book).
Most notable here is that, contrary to what many experts thought, RIM is not the only goal of the stuffy corporate crowd with this device. Sure, it will connect directly to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and supports multitasking.
But with his departure microHDMI, Flash 10.1 with hardware accelerated video, and a strong drive for applications and creating an ecosystem of applications, it is clear that RIM seeks not only the playbook to be an extension of the CrackBerry crowd . Sure, the public will be part of future corporate playbook is. However, even the name of the device represents what appears to be a work under words playbook connotes a casual, play and easy to use device that can be used in off-hours when the workday ends.
In their approach, RIM seems to be following the Apple model, in terms of producing a device whose appeal can cover all players and all connected-suit.
The trick, however, will be in seeing the success of RIM is to attract developers to its platform, and get developers on board to provide a healthy ecosystem in the launch application. Ultimately, the depth of application and selection, along with the actual price of the unit, will help determine where the playbook to fit into the envelope to exploit the market for tablets. I look forward to seeing how the BlackBerry batteries playbook when it does launch.
RIM needed a sexy launch playbook as to attract attention after the BlackBerry torch regulator failed to capture our collective imagination. BlackBerry playbook has the potential to innovate and do it in style, a double blow to RIM urgently needs to be relevant again. Now, let's see if RIM can deliver on the hype with the final product and bring new momentum to its mobile platform, too.
