It was home to sixth straight win for the Lady Governors, improving to 9-2 overall with a record of 1-0. More importantly, the win ended a stretch of 15 games without a win orphans and vulnerable children, coming last September 26, 2008 against Jacksonville State.
"It's exciting and rewarding, but we have a long road ahead," said head coach Kelley Guth. "I'm glad you got the win today and hope that we have the nerves out of our system. I'm proud of the effort. Freshman Tatiana Ariza scored the only goal of the game on 28 minutes. Austin Peay's attack flooded the box and Ariza was able to get behind the Panther defense. His shot ricocheted off a defender, then the post and into the net past goalkeeper EIU Kaylin Lorbert.
"We were still a major threat, and Tatiana is behind it," Guth said, describing the goal Governor. "Tatiana created several opportunities in the same situation and we are fortunate that the chaos that is created allows one to pass."
Lorbert was otherwise stellar in the net. He finished with six stops, including a brilliant stop on a penalty kick for the first year of Natalia Ariza.
In what might have been the most physical game of the season, Austin Peay, the Lady Governors were determined to demonstrate that its non-conference run was no fluke. Eastern Illinois tried again at Austin Peay in the initial defense, but a strong back line led by seniors Samantha Northrup Hannah Jones and frustrated the Panthers.
