Murali acting career that stretches 26 years, took off in 1984, after his debut in "Poovilangu" which was also the directorial debut of Amirjan, an aide to K Balachander. The song, Paavo Aathadi katha 'was a success. "A debut director and actor are not the easiest of combinations. However, Murali was not camera shy and quickly grasped everything," said Amirjan.
