Did you know that from the AP poll on September 20 through the survey just before the weekend's conference championship that the same three teams were the three places? Alabama, Texas and Florida were the dominant trio of more or less the wire cable.
The three finished in the top three in the final rankings as well. Solo aberration occurred when the Gators fell to five after falling to the Crimson Tide in the championship game of the SEC. That's 12 of the last 13 polls with the same three teams perched on top.
That is precisely why we expect this season to be much more chaotic, more open and have a better feel on the top turnbuckle. The story could be repeated, but not in consecutive years and not in college football.
That's not to discount the possibility of repeating Alabama or opportunities for the Gators and Longhorns to be in the mix again. I think there are more potholes and unexpected detours on the road.
The first weekend might not be thriving with highly successful games, but the possibility exists that the tone is set for what we
The eyes have been compressed right past most of the weekend for the clash between the night of Labor Day No. 3 Boise State and No. 10 Virginia Tech.
The Broncos return most of the starting line that built their current streak of 14 wins, tied for longest in the nation with Alabama. The Hokies ride with a stable of runners (Ryan Williams, a healthy Darren Evans and David Wilson) that match favorably with any unit back in the nation. new faces on defense technology will be tested by perhaps the most ready quarterback in college football, Kellen Moore.
But this game has to do with the picture. Could also be a championship game at Boise State. Beat the Hokies and the rest of the season comes down to avoid potholes and get past Oregon. Let's be honest. Apart from the Beavers, no potholes on the scheduled date of the Broncos, just speed bumps.
If Boise State hopes to play for the title of BCS, we must be perfect and expect the rest of the nation repeated the chaotic 2007 season when LSU lost two played for the crown.
While I acknowledge the difficulties of programming Broncos, I hold that it should be more willing to take the old Bobby Bowden / Current Basketball Gonzaga programming model, and not worry about getting consensus in the home and home.
It could also help to be willing to play with or without the king's ransom some visiting teams goes through to "guarantee" games. Schools do not like when you beat them and help finance its program. I'm not saying Boise State is not willing to do that now. I'm just saying that's what the focus of the Broncos should be. Chalk it up to the cost of doing business to move permanently to the elite.
The Virginia Tech game is a good start. Every game should not be such WAC. To play the title game, the Broncos can not afford otherwise.
The good news is part of this problem was alleviated when the Broncos travel to the Mountain West. But this season, the only way that could have an undefeated team from Boise State over a one loss team from the six automatic qualifying conferences is that both Virginia Tech and Oregon State teams appear less 10-win.
The Broncos can beat anyone, but at some point rating assessments should be based on: Who did you play? Who hit you?
This analogy is the best you can imagine: The years I think Gonzaga can make the Final Four or national championship, most likely, I think Western Bulldogs' Coast Conference program would weigh down their resume enough to avoid getting a 1-2 seed or seeds to get there. That is not an argument for a playoff. It's just an analogy.
Hardly be interpreted as an insult to think that Boise State could be BCS worthy, but worthy championship game. College football is full of undefeated teams, no crown, he never had the chance to play for the title. Sometimes, the teams were denied for silly reasons. I can not think of a more justifiable than a weak overall schedule.
But there is a long way to go. Chris Petersen knows there is no discussion to be had unless the Broncos beat the Hokies. Boise State is fast, physical and expert. No way I think it will be overcome or overwhelmed by the moment.
