Sen. John Cornyn said it was "surprising" to hear President Obama will try to take credit "for the results of an approach to the future president was fiercely opposed when President George W. Bush announced in January 2007.
"Our success in Iraq has much to do with the hard work of our men and women in uniform, the Iraqi people and President Bush are resolved. It has nothing to do with the campaign promise of President Obama to carry out the previous administration's plan for returning U.S. troops from Iraq, said Mr. Cornyn.
His comments echoed those hours before the Republican minority leader in the House, John Boehner, who claimed that President Obama and other senior Democrats who opposed this military escalation tried "receivable" by the results.
"Today marks the defeat does not advance these voices - but the progress," Boehner said in a speech to the group of American Legion veterans ahead of President Obama's own comments on the issue of the White House.
"Some leaders who opposed, criticized and fought tooth and nail to stop the surge strategy now proudly credit for the results," the lawmaker said, adding that credit for a more stable Iraq "is part of our troops." President Obama initially increased sharply attacked former President George W Bush "approach, warning that Iraq would stabilize and might even make matters worse, ultimately, before saying he had succeeded beyond anyone's expectations.
