The film, starring Patrick Fabian (Must Love Dogs), Luis Herthum (I Love You Phillip Morris) and Ashley Bell (State of Play), revolves around a reverend who has lost faith in the church and has a film crew along with him to prove that the exorcism is a fraud. Unless things get out of control when it comes to helping a girl actually has. We recently had the opportunity to talk with Ashley Bell, the actress who plays the young possessed girl in the movie, about his new horror film, its classic horror movies, if she believes in exorcism, and what was working with Eli Roth. This is what the talented young actress had to say:
For starters, the film feels very much like a return to classic horror films of the late '70s and early '80s as "The Exorcist" and "Poltergeist", do you think that was the tone of the filmmakers were going to in this?
Ashley Bell: You know, now in preparation, said Daniel to see all the Exorcist movies and then not do it. So we went from the beginning the goal of something that is totally different, totally unique and I think the film turned out to be that. He is very smart and very funny in all the right places. I think it's a very unique movie exorcist. On set, however, Daniel does twenty to thirty shooting a scene that is incredibly release as an actor because this is my first big movie. He welcomed me to try anything and my opinion was welcomed, it can go a lifetime waiting for something. So it was really a safe environment to do anything.
Its role in the film is very physical, did you ever become physically drain you have to do in a row?
Ashley Bell: Yes, I honestly fell in love with this feature from the second I read the ruling. So every day I really welcomed the challenge and was happy to do all that physical work and have the opportunity to play an important role. So I was very proud of all the blows he received. They were war-wounded.
What can you tell us about your character, Nell, and what is happening emotionally in the film?
Ashley Bell: Well Nell is fifteen and from the back woods of Louisiana. She is very religious and thought to be possessed. So when I read that, you know, the theme of exorcism is so fascinating and there is always back and turn the subject. When I read it I loved investigate. As an actress that is what will my mind and makes me both in character as possible. I just tried to read every book I could find on the exorcism. I interviewed people and visited Baptist churches in the valley and everything. So I absorbed as much as I could on the subject, which has no end. Of the actual tapes, the voices you hear and the sounds coming out of the tapes, listening and thinking, this is feasible or human. Then comes a sound that is not a man, woman, human or animal and you just listen and think, what is that? So I had a field day doing my research.
In the beginning of the movie character, Patrick Fabian, Rev. Marcus Cotton has lost faith in the practice of exorcism. Now that you have made this film and research you have done, do you think exorcisms are real?
Ashley Bell: Yes it's interesting, I'm not as dubious as they are now going in. Its weird because you think its wrong or is the power of suggestion, but honestly with things you hear and some of the things I've read does not seem humanly possible, what happens. Especially those tapes I've heard, when you're listening to something that is as I said, not worldly. You really are, "What's that?" My position has changed altogether. I think (the film) is largely through his perspective, Rev. Marcus Cotton, and he is so sure and so confident going in. As he begins to doubt himself and his beliefs begin to crumble like an audience feel very vulnerable and susceptible to disease. I think that's where the horror and suspense comes from the movie.
Can you talk about the struggle that begins to develop in the film between the father of her character and Rev. cotton?
Ashley Bell: Louis Herthum plays my father in the film, and is an amazing actor. It is one of the most generous and give the actors to work with them. Most of my scenes are with him and Patrick Fabian who is also wonderful. Many of the scenes were just filming us all with Daniel and Zoltan, AD, and take after take were made for each other. I believe that without the confidence that none of us could have accomplished what we did was really a gift to work with them.
The story of the film is set in a documentary style, is that correct?
Ashley Bell: Yes, the Reverend has called the documentary crew to help him to come clean on all their tricks in the exorcism. He makes a fake on me one night and then eventually all hell breaks loose when the real thing comes.
Can you talk about Eli Roth and producer Marc Abraham and his contributions to this movie?
Ashley Bell: Marc was definitely on set, everything was Hit Entertainment. They were very hands of the producers all the way through. They were very involved and invested in the project. You may feel that a lot of care was to make this film. I had the chance to see Eli a bit in the editing room and it was very exciting because I really see it building suspense and creating such a horror as it does with skill. It's almost like mathematics. He said: "Okay, cut it here and here." He builds the tension and excitement builds that what has been passionate about this project. He and Daniel, I really have created something so unique and so different brand of horror movie, which I think both the fans and horror fans will be excited.
Finally, if you had the opportunity to speak directly to the "old school" horror fans, what would you tell them to get them excited and interested in this film?
Ashley Bell: Well, I've been a horror fan all my life and you mentioned Poltergeist and The Exorcist and I grew up watching movies like that. I saw this movie for the first time at the Film Festival of Los Angeles and then went home and actually slept in my parents' house in Los Angeles because it scares me. Is very exciting, very afraid and is unique. I think people will be surprised at what they see.
