Google's Gmail new call can be a great way for consumers to make free calls and low-cost voice, but the service is not yet ready for business using Google Apps, the suite of search giant programs the cloud-based productivity.
That's the word from the voice of Google product manager Vincent Paquet, who told reporters Wednesday at a press conference in San Francisco that, at least for now, Gmail voice calling is not available for companies who have made switching to Google Apps.
That will change, however. While the administrative tools that allow IT departments to manage voice chat in Gmail is not here today, will arrive - eventually. According to InformationWeek, called Gmail Paquet suggested - the possibility of saving money for companies - is part of Google's grand strategy by calling voice. There is no timetable for the implementation of business was given, however.
Even without the integration with Google Apps, Gmail video and voice chat can save money on business users, especially small shops that do a lot of browser-based calls to landlines and mobile phones abroad.
Taking a not so subtle hit of Skype, the leader in Voice over IP (VoIP) call, Google said that its international tariffs lower than those of a "leading provider of Internet phone." For example, Google charges 15 cents per minute for calls to mobile phones in France. In comparison, Skype pay-as-you-go "plan for Francophiles costs 20.3 cents per minute.
Skype, however, offers several service packages to reduce costs, including a plan for $ 10.29/month for 60 minutes of calls to landlines and mobiles in France. That comes out to 17.2 cents per minute. Yes, that's still higher than Google's offering, but the difference may not be large enough to persuade users to switch to Skype's voice Gmail. Google, of course, without doubt, offer a list of packages of negotiation itself.
Even if users do not abandon ship Skype, Google can achieve a significant market share of voice calls by accessing the business and consumer users who have not tried Skype or competing VoIP services. In fact, the tone tempter Google - Gmail integration and calling for the dirt-cheap - is bound to resonate with the cost-cutters everywhere.
