Mike Garrett

Winner of the Heisman Trophy as the Trojans work in 1965, Garrett returned to USC in 1990. As sporting director, he oversaw the growth of soccer schools, and men's basketball program, only to them penalties for violations of the rules of NCAA.

It was only six months ago - before the NCAA hit USC with a string of penalties - is Mike Garrett was sitting in the office and dismissed any notion of his post.

Athletic Director came under fire numerous, serious abuses that occurred under his control, but said that more than he wants to achieve.

"I tell you, when I finished," he said. "Then you can talk about retirement."

Although Garrett was unavailable for comment on Tuesday morning, he recently spoke about the ups and downs that have marked his career.

As an athlete at Roosevelt High in Boyle Heights, he dreamed of playing for UCLA, Bruins, but considered him too small.

When legendary coach John McKay offered a scholarship, Garrett was among the privileged students of USC body that does not welcome minorities on fraternity row in 1962. And there was another reason to be afraid.
