Loch Ness Monster

I came to Scotland in search of the Loch Ness monster, and found a ghost instead. Of course, I also sample a lot of Scots, which may lead some to think that my vision is impaired. For those skeptics, I say, "Chill". My camera records the event. At least, I think it was done.

But let me start from the beginning. Scotland has always appealed to me. His wild places - its mountains, marshes, lakes and islands - to talk with my Scotch-Irish roots.
I'd love to take one month and hike the high mountains and walk the dark green valley in the mountains that cover from the month of islands, sailing as much wind Islands of Scotland - there are more than 700 - as much as possible.

What is the time or money? Not I. So I went for a week, and, taking as possible. My plan took me to the mountains, I would spend the day watching the unfathomable deep waters of Loch Ness, to plunge into the environment of the Middle Ages in the historic stone walls of Scotland's castles and hop on the water to see the island, or 2. I also try to learn a little more about one of the most famous export of the country: its smooth, soft malt liquor.

Scotch can not be loved drinks in America - vodka holds that title - but the Americans managed to knock over 100 million bottles per year, from cheap blends highbrow varieties with prices to match. Michael Jordan's favorite Macallan 25-year-old whiskey, worth about $ 600 a bottle from the shelf.

U.S. bars that serve the Scottish fans, such as the Daily Pint in Santa Monica, stock hundreds of varieties, the members of the Los Angeles Scottish club (www.lascotchclub.com) work hard to design their fair share. "We are small but very dedicated to the community, "said Andy Smith, who publishes the newsletter of the club to be sent 350.

As a growing number of fans Scotch, they prefer single malts - a product of a separate department - and not a mixture. "We are snobby," says Smith.

I do not know enough about the tape for snobby. But Scotland has more than 100 plants and half of the visitors centers. They are happy to show visitors around and treat them "wee dram".

So why not combine the tasting with travel? "I have to make sure I did not sample too much, I jokingly said to a colleague before I left on a trip last month," or I would spot the Loch Ness Monster or see a ghost.
