Lake Michigan Credit Union

Lake Michigan Credit Union opened a full-service branch in the center of Saint Joseph of May, the first institution in the presence of Berrien County - and the restoration of financial services in the historic Bank building on State Street.

The credit union moved into the dome top of limestone structure, which opened in 1912 and became the people of the State Bank in 1932, remaining in the successive incarnations of the bank Fifth Third, to up to 11 years ago.

Building owner Joe Giannola said the building is still available the old vaults, and in one, the workers even found enough green marbles to make the necessary updates to the new user.

Since he bought the building about 15 years ago, he was busy with Fox's Pizza for 5 years and St. Joseph Today, six years.

"They used it as a facility to help people who have problems - either physical or learning abilities", Giannola said, referring to Pizza Fox, and the entire restaurant has been designed so that they can help these young people learn how to sell pizza. "

St. Joseph Today, State Street had slipped to less than a quarter, and Lake Michigan Credit Union, which first expect to open a mortgage office in the city, decided to establish a full-service branch, and the only ATM in town.

"It was a very easy transition for them", Giannola said. "We saved a lot of marble and the cashier station. We restored two teller stations for them.

"There are two sets of the day and there is one big crypt, which is really security safes in it yet.

Lake Michigan Credit Union, beginning in 1933 and based in Grand Rapids, has 31 branches planned to open another this year in Portage. With $ 2 billion in assets and 161000 members, is the largest credit union in the state.
