Eddie Fisher, one of the original bad boys of Hollywood, died Wednesday at age 82. Fisher, well known for his series of top 40 hits as it was for a scandalous life, which included personal struggle with addiction and multiple marriages Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds, died in Berkley, California, due to complications from recent hip surgery, according to a statement released by his family.
"He was loved and will be missed by his four children: Carrie, Todd, Joely and Tricia Leigh and his six grandchildren," the statement said, according to Reuters. "It was an extraordinary talent and [" decent person "in Yiddish] a real mensch."
The fourth of seven children born to parents of Russian Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia on August 10, 1928, Fisher began her singing career as a child, singing in local amateur contests and radio programs. Eventually withdrew from school in his senior year to pursue a musical career and was discovered in the 1940's. After a stint in the Army, he embarked on a multifaceted career that includes two television series, a string of successes and reservations at the popular nightclubs.
A teen idol at a time when the first seeds of rock and roll is being planted, Fisher was a singer-through road, whose popularity was so great that Coca-Cola signed a contract will then Prince $ 1 million to be its spokesman and head of its first TV series "Coke Time with Eddie Fisher."
When the rock finally broke through and the most dangerous and seductive Fisher eclipsed Elvis Presley in the charts, Fisher's music career failed. Began a series of famous celebrity marriages (and divorces), struggling with drug addiction cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription. In his autobiography, "Been there, done that", he admitted that his romantic entanglements likely to overshadow his artistic legacy ". It is not the music that people remember most about me is the woman," he wrote.
His first marriage to movie star Debbie Reynolds, with whom she had two children. One was Carrie Fisher, the famous author and film star who played Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" films. That marriage fell apart in 1958, when Fisher left one of the scandals of the most notorious celebrities of the era, beginning a romance with screen queen Elizabeth Taylor as he tried to console her for the death of her husband and good friend of Fisher , film producer Mike Todd. The scandal cost his TV series Fisher second, "The Eddie Fisher Show", and essentially sank his career. However, Taylor made an international sex symbol and superstar.
Taylor Fisher married in 1959 and co-starred in the film "Butterfield 8", but when rumors surfaced that Taylor was having an affair with Richard "Cleopatra" co-star in Burton, Fisher was on the outputs. Taylor dumped him and married Burton in 1964. The next stop was actress Connie Fisher Stevens, and two years of marriage ended in divorce and produced two more children. One of them was the actress Joely Fisher, known for his roles in television programs "Ellen" and "'Til Death."
During the years she was romantically entangled with a number of aspiring stars, including Marlene Dietrich, Dinah Shore, Angie Dickinson and Kim Novak. He also married twice, Terry Richard (who lasted a year) and Betty Lin, who stayed with him from 1993 until his death in 2001.
